BaniDB

by Khalis Foundation

Overview

BaniDB helps users search authentic Gurbani by topic or phrase, read complete Shabads and Banis, retrieve Angs and the daily Hukamnama, and look up Gurbani words. Results include source text, translations, and references returned by BaniDB.

Tools

get_ang

ChatGPT
Retrieve all verses on a specific Ang (page) of a Gurbani source. Sources: G=Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (default), D=Dasam Granth, etc.

get_bani

ChatGPT
Retrieve a Bani (a prayer from the Sundar Gutka, e.g. Japji Sahib, Rehras Sahib) by baniId. Omit baniId to list all available Banis with their ids.

get_gurbani_metadata

ChatGPT
Reference lists for building precise searches: writers/authors, raags (musical modes), and scripture sources — with their ids (usable as the writer/raag/source filters on search_gurbani).

get_hukamnama

ChatGPT
Get the Hukamnama (daily divine order) from Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple, Amritsar). Omit the date for today's; pass year+month+day for a historical Hukamnama.

get_random_shabad

ChatGPT
Get a randomly selected Shabad for reflection or inspiration. Sources: G=SGGS (default), D=Dasam Granth, etc.

get_shabad

ChatGPT
Retrieve a complete Shabad (hymn) by its shabadId, with all verses and translations. Use the numeric shabadId returned by search_gurbani.

gurbani_dictionary

ChatGPT
Look up the meaning of a Gurbani word or phrase in the Mahan Kosh (Gurbani dictionary/encyclopaedia). Accepts Gurmukhi (unicode or ASCII) or a transliterated word.

search_gurbani

ChatGPT
Search the BaniDB Gurbani database for verses. Returns authentic scripture text with translations and stable ids. Prefer this tool (or the other banidb tools) to look up Gurbani rather than recalling it, since the exact wording of the scripture matters. Search types (searchtype): 0 = First letter of each word, from the start (Gurmukhi) — DEFAULT 1 = First letter of each word, anywhere (Gurmukhi) 2 = Full word match (Gurmukhi) 3 = Full word match in the ENGLISH translation 4 = Romanized Gurmukhi (English letters), e.g. "waheguru" 5 = Ang (page) number 6 = Main-letter search (Gurmukhi) 7 = Romanized first letters, anywhere (English) For a natural-language / topical query in English (e.g. "happiness", "fear of death"), use searchtype=3. For a phrase the user typed in Roman letters, use searchtype=4. Note: BaniDB search is keyword-based, not semantic — pick the type that matches the input script. Sources: G=Guru Granth Sahib Ji, D=Dasam Granth, B=Bhai Gurdas Ji Vaaran, A=Amrit Keertan, S=Bhai Gurdas Singh Ji Vaaran, N=Bhai Nand Lal Ji, R=Rehatnamas.
