BarSmith Barcode Maker

Overview

BarSmith Barcode Maker generates printable barcodes and validates barcode numbers. It is built for product labeling, warehouse and shelf labels, shipping cartons, and book publishing. Supported symbologies are EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, GS1-128, Code 39, ITF-14, ISBN, and ISSN, drawn to the GS1 and ISO symbol specifications. The tool returns a vector SVG and a PNG. Check digits are computed when you leave them off and verified when you include them. If a check digit is wrong, the result shows the arithmetic step by step and the corrected number. You can also validate a UPC, EAN, GTIN-14, SSCC, ISBN, or ISSN number on its own, convert ISBN-10 to ISBN-13, expand UPC-E to UPC-A, or compress UPC-A to UPC-E. Code 128 switches between code sets A, B, and C to keep the symbol short. GS1-128 accepts Application Identifiers in parentheses, such as (01) GTIN, (17) expiry date, (10) batch or lot, and (21) serial number. It validates their lengths, dates, and check digits and inserts FNC1 separators where GS1 requires them. Each barcode comes with its calculated print size and GS1 guidance on magnification, X-dimension, bar height, and quiet zones. ITF-14 carton codes include bearer bars. Book barcodes can carry a 2- or 5-digit add-on. Set a label printer resolution (203, 300, or 600 dpi) and bar widths snap to whole printer dots. Example: "Make a GS1-128 barcode with GTIN 09501101530003, expiry date 2026-12-31 and lot LOT42." Limitations: the tool draws barcodes for numbers you already have. It does not issue GS1 company prefixes or GTINs; retail UPC and EAN numbers must be licensed from GS1, and ISBNs come from a national ISBN agency. One barcode per request. No 2D codes such as QR or Data Matrix. It cannot scan barcode images or look up products or their owners.

generate_barcode

Claude
Use this when the user wants a barcode generator: a UPC or EAN-13 barcode for a product, a Code 128 barcode for a SKU or label, GS1-128 with (01) GTIN, (17) expiry and (10) lot, Code 39, an ITF-14 carton code, or a book ISBN barcode. Computes or verifies the check digit (explains a wrong one), applies GS1 quiet zones and sizes, and returns SVG and PNG download links plus calculated print dimensions. Does not issue or register GS1 numbers (real UPC/EAN numbers must be licensed from GS1), does not scan images or look up products. Do not use for QR codes.

validate_barcode_number

Claude
Use this when the user asks whether a UPC, EAN, GTIN-8/12/13/14, SSCC, ISBN-10/13 or ISSN number is valid, what its check digit should be, or wants to convert ISBN-10 to ISBN-13, UPC-E to UPC-A, or UPC-A to EAN-13/GTIN-14. Explains the check-digit arithmetic, gives the corrected number and the GS1 prefix meaning. Does not tell who owns a number, whether it is registered with GS1, or what product it is; does not look anything up online.
