Overview

Beast Insights is a payments reference for merchants, payments operations teams, support agents and developers. Ask about a card decline, a chargeback or a 3-D Secure result and get a plain-English explanation, the likely cause, what to do next, and links to the source. What it covers: - Card decline codes: ISO 8583 response codes such as 05 "do not honor" and 51 "insufficient funds", and processor-specific codes from Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, NMI, Authorize.net, Checkout.com, Worldpay, PayPal and Square, with whether and when to retry. - Chargeback reason codes: Visa, Mastercard, Amex and Discover reason codes such as 10.4 and 4853, what the cardholder is claiming, the response window and the evidence that usually wins. - 3-D Secure results: transStatus and ECI values, what they mean for authentication and who carries liability. - Payments terms: clear definitions of terms such as BIN, MID, acquirer, interchange, representment and soft vs hard declines. What it does not do: it needs no sign-in, holds no customer data, never asks for card numbers, doesn't move money and doesn't recommend processors. Answers are reference information and cite their sources.

Tools

define_payment_term

Claude
Use this when someone asks what a payments, card-processing or chargeback term means: "what is a rolling reserve", "what does MID mean", "what is interchange", "representment", "friendly fraud", "acquirer". Returns a plain-language definition, related terms and the source page. Do not use for decline codes, chargeback reason codes, 3-D Secure results or merchant category codes; those have dedicated tools.

explain_3ds_result

Claude
Use this when someone sees a 3-D Secure (3DS, Verified by Visa, Mastercard Identity Check, Amex SafeKey) result or error, such as "3D Secure authentication failed", "not authenticated", "card not enrolled", "authentication could not be performed", ECI 07, or transStatus N or U, and wants to know what happened, who carries liability, and whether to retry with or without 3DS. Covers 3DS1 and 3DS2. Provide at least one of trans_status, eci or message. Do not use for plain authorization declines (use explain_decline_code).

explain_chargeback_reason_code

Claude
Use this when someone has a chargeback, dispute or retrieval reason code and wants to understand or respond to it: "Visa 10.4", "Mastercard 4837", "Amex C08", "Discover UA02", or the dispute reason shown by their processor. Returns the network category, what the cardholder is claiming, typical root causes, the response window, the evidence that usually wins, and prevention steps. Do not use for decline or authorization codes (use explain_decline_code).

explain_decline_code

Claude
Use this when someone has a card payment decline or authorization response code and wants to know what it means and what to do next: for example "05 do not honor", "code 51", "insufficient funds", "declined by issuing bank", or a processor code such as Stripe card_declined / insufficient_funds, Braintree 2001, NMI 202 or an Adyen refusal reason. Returns the standard meaning, whether it is a soft or hard decline, whether the card networks permit a retry and within what limits, likely causes, and separate next steps for merchants and for cardholders. Do not use for 3-D Secure failures (use explain_3ds_result), chargeback or dispute reason codes (use explain_chargeback_reason_code), or ACH return codes.
