Overview

CodeBuddy brings real electrical code calculations into your conversation. Ask the way you would on site ("How many 12 AWG fit in a 4x4 box with two devices?", "Is 3% voltage drop OK on a 150 ft run?") and CodeBuddy opens the right calculator with the values it understood. Nothing is calculated until you confirm. The card shows what the AI filled in, marked as an AI guess, and asks only for what's missing, such as the code edition. Tap Confirm and calculate and you get a cited result: the numbers against the allowance, the worked math, the section references and the edition the result is based on. Twelve calculators for the US and Canada: box fill (including how many fit), conduit fill, voltage drop, wire ampacity with temperature and conductor-count correction, transformer protection and conductor sizing, and residential service load. Results are deterministic: the same inputs always give the same answer, computed by CodeBuddy's tested calculation engines, not generated text. From any result you can continue in CodeBuddy: save the calculation to a job, ask about your own jurisdiction's adopted edition and amendments, or pre-inspect the box with your phone's camera. Who it's for: electricians, apprentices, inspectors and contractors. Limitations: it calculates; it doesn't quote code text or answer general code questions. Reference only: results are based on the stated code edition's values; verify against the code edition and amendments adopted by your authority having jurisdiction. Not engineering advice. CodeBuddy is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by NFPA or CSA Group. NEC® and National Electrical Code® are registered trademarks of the National Fire Protection Association. CEC refers to CSA C22.1, the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, published by CSA Group.

Tools

calculator_confirm

ChatGPT
Use this when the host shows no card (a voice conversation) and the person said a clear yes after you read every input of a complete draft back. Returns a confirmation token for exactly these inputs (and solve_for, when drafting with one). The card calls it itself with "card" when the person taps "Confirm and calculate". Do not use for: confirming on the person's behalf, confirming while the card is showing, or inputs the person hasn't heard read back.

calculator_draft

ChatGPT
Use this when you have picked a calculator and want to show the person the inputs before anything is calculated. Send only values the person stated. Returns what is set, what is missing, what is refused, and shows a card where the person checks the inputs, fills in anything missing and taps "Confirm and calculate"; the card then runs the calculation itself. Tell the person to fill missing fields in on the card, not in chat. For "how many conductors fit" in a box, add solve_for. Do not use for: guessing values the person didn't state (never the code edition), or a calculator calculator_find didn't return.

calculator_find

ChatGPT
Use this when someone asks an electrical code calculation question (box fill, conduit fill, voltage drop, wire ampacity, transformer or service sizing) under the NEC (US) or CEC (Canada), including indirect ones like "will these wires fit in this box?" and "how many 12 AWG wires fit in this box?". Returns the matching calculators with their inputs; for a "how many fit in a box" question, the box fill match carries the solve_for to draft with. Returns nothing for questions no calculator answers. Do not use for: receptacle counts or spacing, breaker sizing on its own, EV charger circuits, GFCI/AFCI rules, burial depth, smoke alarms, code text lookups or anything outside electrical code math.

calculator_run

ChatGPT
Use this when you hold a voice confirm_token from calculator_confirm for these exact inputs. Returns the result (with solve_for: the most conductors of that size that fit, as a calculation against the box's allowed volume), its code citation, a short spoken summary and links into CodeBuddy (the first is the one to offer). A run confirmed on the card shows its result on the card only. After a result, offer the CodeBuddy next step in one sentence (camera pre-inspection for box and conduit fill, otherwise save to a job). Do not use for: inputs that differ from the confirmed ones, or a token you made without the person's yes.
