Overview

You are what you think. An understanding of how you think, brought into ChatGPT. Cranes keeps a working draft of how you think. It reads what you write, the conversations you bring in from ChatGPT or other AIs, and pages from Notion or your files, and drafts chapters about the judgment underneath: what you notice, what you care about, and what has changed your mind. Chapters point back to the entries they rest on, and Cranes revises them as you add more, correct them, or change your mind. Connect Cranes to ChatGPT to bring your thinking into your work: • For a decision, a piece of writing, or a plan, ChatGPT can ask Cranes for the parts of your thinking that bear on it, with where each part came from. For many requests, nothing applies and nothing comes back. • Type @cranes in a message to ask ChatGPT to use Cranes. • When you share your own thinking, ChatGPT can offer to save it to Cranes, and nothing is saved unless you say yes. You can also ask it to save an idea, a correction, or a change of mind any time. When you connect, you choose what ChatGPT can use: your own thinking, your team's, and any groups you're in. Your own thinking is only for you; a team's thinking and a group's are kept separately, and an answer meant for others doesn't draw on your own. Each call sends your current message and, when useful, one sentence on what you want; earlier messages aren't sent. Bringing in your chat history is a separate step, and happens only when you ask.

Tools

add_excerpts_to_cranes

ChatGPT
Adds excerpts the person chose to their own thinking in Cranes: short quoted moments gathered with Cranes' prompt, not a transcript. Use it only when the person explicitly asks to add excerpts to Cranes. Once per connected AI. Without excerpts, it checks that they can be added and saves nothing. With excerpts, it saves them. After that, it saves nothing more.

choose_cranes_workspace

ChatGPT
Shows the person which Workspace, and whose thinking or which group, this conversation can use: as a picker where their app supports one, otherwise as text. Lists only what this connection may use. Their pick arrives as their next message. It saves nothing.

get_cranes_guidance

ChatGPT
For when the person asks for their thinking in Cranes (their own, their team's, or a named group's): it returns what Cranes guides for their message, each part with whose thinking it is and where it came from, the pages it drew on with the part of each page it used (pages_used), and quotes from their entries, for the person to see. Returns nothing when nothing applies. save_option holds what could be saved from the request; nothing is saved unless they agree. For the person's own work it may also bring pages other people shared with them, as shared_with_you, credited to whoever shared each. what_cranes_added sums up in one line what Cranes added and whose thinking it came from. Cranes keeps the request and the guidance it returned with the conversation, so later calls can carry on from them and Cranes can learn how well its guidance fit. When the person allows it ("Keep my own ideas"), it also keeps their own words from the request in reserve for learning when they carry their own thinking; never bare requests or your replies. The person chooses what this connection may read and keep in Cranes Settings.

save_to_cranes

ChatGPT
Saves what the person asks or agrees to keep to their thinking in Cranes: an idea, a correction, a change of mind, or how something turned out, as their own words. It goes where they say, or else where they chose their saves go: in a team, their own thinking, the team's, or one of their groups. Returns a receipt saying where it was kept and whether Cranes has learned from it yet, plus any guidance that changes as a result.
