Derive

Overview

Connect your Derive notebook to ChatGPT to search and ask about your handwritten STEM notes. Find relevant excerpts, list recent pages, read recognized page text, and inspect available page previews. Text results respect your access to pages, including shared pages. Page previews require an accessible saved thumbnail. The tools do not edit or delete notebook content. Recognized text can contain errors, and long page results can be truncated.

Tools

get_page_context

ChatGPT
Read one Derive page in full: its summary, topic labels, recognized math/handwriting text, the freshest synced content, and any sub-pages nested under it. Call this once you know which page the user means (use search_notes or list_recent_pages first). A page whose own text looks thin often has its real work in the sub-pages this returns.

get_page_image

ChatGPT
Return a Derive page as an image (a rendered preview) so you can look at the actual handwriting, sketches or diagrams. Call this when the text is not enough: a drawing, a graph, a circuit, a table, or "look at my page". For anything written, get_page_context is more accurate than reading the image.

list_recent_pages

ChatGPT
List the most recently updated pages in the user's Derive notebook: page title, the unit and section it sits in, when it was last edited, its topic tags and a one-line AI summary. Call this to orient yourself before answering questions about what the user has been working on, and as the fallback when a search returns nothing.

search_notes

ChatGPT
Search the user's handwritten Derive notebook (notes, math work, diagrams, code) and return the most relevant excerpts, each named by its page title and its place in the unit/section hierarchy. Call this whenever the user asks about their notes, their coursework, or something they wrote down. Prefer several narrow searches over one broad one: the notebook spans a whole degree, so "Laplace transform region of convergence" finds the page and "maths" does not. Read a page properly with get_page_context afterwards rather than answering from an excerpt.
