Overview

GovBot Earthquakes & Landslides is a remote, read-only MCP server operated by Ideation Lab, Corp. It requires no account. It reports past earthquakes from the USGS Earthquake Catalog (ComCat) and mapped landslides from the USGS U.S. Landslide Inventory, read live from the U.S. Geological Survey's own services, each result with its source, query period and retrieval time. What it returns: - Earthquakes within a radius of a latitude and longitude, filtered by magnitude and date range, with distance, depth, magnitude type and felt-report counts. - Earthquake counts by magnitude band and decade, and the largest earthquakes, for a U.S. state or a radius. - Details of one earthquake by USGS event id: origin, magnitude, review status, and the ShakeMap and Did You Feel It? summaries as published. - Significant earthquakes in a period, worldwide or in one state, by the USGS significance value. - Landslides recorded near a location, with type, date where recorded, USGS confidence class and contributing inventory. Typical use: review the recorded earthquake history around a site or in a state, or check for mapped landslides near a location, before reading the agencies' own hazard products. How results are qualified: these are catalog records of past events, not forecasts or predictions, building-safety, engineering or insurance determinations, or an alerting source. Catalog completeness varies by magnitude, region and era; the landslide inventory compiles inventories of differing scope, and absence of a record does not establish absence of landslides. Not affiliated with the USGS, the Census Bureau or any government agency. The server writes nothing.

Tools

get_earthquake_details

ChatGPT
Returns one earthquake from the USGS Earthquake Catalog (ComCat) by its USGS event id (for example nm606657): origin time (UTC), epicenter, depth, magnitude, magnitude type and the network that computed it, review status, location description, other catalog ids, the Did You Feel It? summary (response count and maximum community intensity), the ShakeMap summary as published (maximum MMI, peak ground acceleration and peak ground velocity with the units stated in the ShakeMap info file, map status and version), the USGS significance value, the tsunami flag and the USGS event page.

list_significant_earthquakes

ChatGPT
Lists earthquakes from the USGS Earthquake Catalog (ComCat) at or above a USGS significance value (default 600, an inclusive catalog cutoff chosen by this operation; the USGS significant-event website uses a strict value greater than 600) in a UTC date range, worldwide or within one U.S. state (Census Bureau TIGERweb boundary applied to epicenters). USGS computes significance from magnitude, maximum intensity, felt reports and estimated impact. Returns the total count and one page of events (20 by default, at most 100) ordered newest first or largest first, each with its USGS event id, time, magnitude, location, significance value and event page.

search_earthquakes_near_point

ChatGPT
Lists earthquakes in the USGS Earthquake Catalog (ComCat) whose epicenters lie within a radius of a latitude/longitude point, filtered by magnitude and UTC date range, retrieved directly from the USGS FDSN event service with a ten-minute response cache. Returns the total matching count and one page of events (20 by default, at most 100) ordered newest first, oldest first or largest first. Each event carries its USGS event id, origin time (UTC), magnitude and magnitude type, depth, epicenter, distance from the point, location description, review status, Did You Feel It? response count and maximum reported intensity, ShakeMap maximum intensity where published, and the USGS event page. Earthquakes only; quarry blasts and explosions are excluded.

search_landslides_near_point

ChatGPT
Lists landslides recorded in the USGS U.S. Landslide Inventory (Landslide Inventories across the United States, version 3.0, February 2025) within a radius of a latitude/longitude point, retrieved directly from the USGS organization’s ArcGIS Online feature services with a ten-minute response cache (layer metadata cached up to 24 hours). Returns the count of point and polygon records in the radius, counts by contributing inventory, the polygon records that contain the point itself, and the nearest records (20 by default, at most 100) with distance from the point to the record's location (polygon centroid for polygons), landslide type, date or date range where recorded, fatalities where recorded, the USGS confidence class and its definition, the contributing inventory and its link.

summarize_earthquakes_for_area

ChatGPT
Counts earthquakes in the USGS Earthquake Catalog (ComCat) for one U.S. state or for a radius around a latitude/longitude point, over a UTC date range and above a minimum magnitude, and lists the largest of them. Counts are given in total, by magnitude band and by decade, with the earliest and latest event dates. A state area is the Census Bureau TIGERweb state boundary (retrieved directly with a 24-hour cache, generalized to 0.01 degree; boundary vintage is not asserted) applied to epicenters. The area takes either state or latitude, longitude and radius_km. An area with more than 20,000 matching events in the USGS service returns an error naming the count; a higher minimum magnitude or a shorter period narrows it.
