Overview

inDM turns Instagram comments into automatic direct messages. Someone comments a keyword on a reel or post, and inDM replies to them privately with the link, the code or the answer the creator set up. This connection is the building and debugging surface for that. Describe the automation you want — the post, the keyword, the message, the link — and it is created on your inDM account as a draft. You review it, then set it live in the same conversation or in the inDM app. Nothing is sent through this connection. No direct message, no public comment reply and no broadcast leaves Instagram by this path. Every automation is created with status draft, and a single tool, set_automation_status, is what makes one live. Once it is live the automation runs on inDM's own engine, unattended, whether or not this conversation is open. What you can do here: • Draft and check an automation before you have connected anything, so you can see the shape of one first. • Look up the Instagram and inDM rules that govern it — the 24-hour messaging window, how keyword matching works, the three-link ceiling Meta imposes, follow-up timing, and the follow and email gates. • List your connected Instagram accounts and your recent posts and reels, and pull in a post that was published moments ago. • Create an automation on a specific post, change one later, and set it live or pause it. • Read how an automation is doing: how many times it triggered, how many messages went out, how many were delivered and how many failed. Aggregate counts only. • Diagnose an account that has gone quiet — whether Instagram has paused the connection and why, whether messages are queued behind a send cap, and which errors Instagram has returned recently. • Check what happened for one named person, by exact Instagram handle, when a creator asks why someone did not receive a message. What it cannot do, by design: it cannot send a message, browse, list or export your followers, read what anyone wrote to you, or touch billing. It cannot see an account you have not connected, or any workspace you are not a member of. You connect with your existing inDM account. Instagram access is granted separately, inside inDM, through Meta's own login — this connection never sees your Instagram password. inDM is an independent product built on Meta's official Instagram API. It is not endorsed by, sponsored by, or affiliated with Meta Platforms, Inc.

Tools

check_recipient

ChatGPT
Looks up ONE person by an exact Instagram handle and reports what happened: whether they triggered an automation, whether a message was sent, and if it failed, why. It needs the exact handle; it cannot browse or list people, and it returns no message content from either side.

create_automation

ChatGPT
Creates a comment-to-DM automation on one of the creator's posts, with status draft; set_automation_status is what makes it live. Takes the keywords, the DM, an optional link and button label, an optional public reply, and optionally an opt-in opener, a follow gate, an email gate with their wording, and a follow-up message.

diagnose

ChatGPT
An end-to-end check of an account: whether Instagram has paused the connection and why, whether messages are queued or held behind a send cap, which errors Instagram has returned recently, and whether any automation is configured in a way that cannot fire. Covers the "why did nobody get the DM" question.

draft_automation

ChatGPT
Checks and normalises a comment-to-DM automation: the keyword, the public reply, the opt-in button label, the DM and the link. Returns the finished specification together with anything that would have made it misfire. Works without a connected account, so the shape of an automation can be seen before one exists.

explain_limit

ChatGPT
Explains one rule that governs Instagram automation — the 24-hour messaging window, how keywords match, the three-link ceiling, follow-up timing, the follow and email gates, send speed, or which capabilities depend on the workspace's plan. Covers the questions that begin "why can't it do that".

get_automation_stats

ChatGPT
Results for one automation over a window: how many times it triggered, how many messages went out, how many were delivered and how many failed. Aggregate counts only; it returns no individual recipients.

list_accounts

ChatGPT
The creator's connected Instagram accounts: the handle, follower count, whether Instagram has paused the connection, and the plan each workspace is on. The source of the account ids the other tools take.

list_automations

ChatGPT
Every automation in the workspace with its status, trigger, keywords and the post it is bound to.

list_media

ChatGPT
The creator's recent Instagram posts and reels, newest first, with each one's id, type, caption and permalink. This is what inDM has SYNCED, which can lag Instagram by a few minutes; refresh_content pulls in anything newer.

refresh_content

ChatGPT
Pulls the creator's newest posts and reels from Instagram immediately — the same refresh the Content page's button performs. Relevant when list_media is missing a post that was just published. Waits for the sync and reports how many posts came in.

set_automation_status

ChatGPT
Switches an automation between live and paused. Live means it begins replying to people on the creator's account; paused means engagement arriving while it is paused is not answered and is not replayed afterwards.

update_automation

ChatGPT
Changes an existing automation: its keywords, the DM, the link, the button labels, the opener, the gates and their wording, or the follow-up. Fields that are absent from the call are left as they are. It does not change whether the automation is live or paused; set_automation_status does that.
