Overview

OpenCase checks legal writing against the law. It confirms that the cases, statutes, and regulations a brief, memo, or contract cites exist as cited, that quoted language appears word for word in the source, and whether a case is still good law. It also answers legal questions with authority it has retrieved and verified. Tools: - Verify citations in legal text: finds every citation in a document and checks each one. - Resolve legal citations: checks a list of citations and returns source details. - Check a quotation: confirms a quote appears word for word in the authority, honoring ellipses and brackets. - Get legal authority: retrieves one authority's metadata and text. - Check case validity and Get case treatments: report a case's good-law flag and the decisions that cited it. - Research a legal question and Review document against law: return cited answers and grounded findings. - Detect legal citations: lists citations and their positions without checking them. - Search federal court dockets and Get a docket filing: search CourtListener RECAP. Coverage spans US federal and state law and many other jurisdictions. OpenCase is a research tool, not a lawyer: a citation it cannot find may still exist, and a verified citation still needs a lawyer's judgment. Requires an OpenCase account, which you can create while connecting. Free accounts include 10 tool calls a day; a paid plan removes the limit.

Tools

check_case_validity

ChatGPT
Is this case still good law? Takes one case, such as "550 U.S. 544". A pending, provisional, preliminary, or stale result is not a clearance. To see which decisions cited it and how, use get_case_treatments.

check_quote

ChatGPT
Check whether a quotation appears word for word in the full text of one authority, identified by citation or OpenCase legalContentId. Ellipses and bracketed alterations are honored. This is a plain text comparison, not an AI judgment.

get_case_treatments

ChatGPT
Which later decisions cited one case, such as "550 U.S. 544", and how each treated it. For negative treatment, pass treatmentClasses ["negative", "cautionary"]: negative is overruled, reversed, vacated, or abrogated; cautionary is questioned, superseded, or declined to follow. Null treatment fields mean the citing reference has not been analyzed. For the case-level good-law status, use check_case_validity.

get_docket_filing

ChatGPT
Retrieve one numbered CourtListener RECAP docket entry and any contributed document text. RECAP may contain filing metadata without document text.

review_document_against_law

ChatGPT
Research law relevant to a supplied legal document and return grounded findings, authorities, and proposed edits. Proposed edits are not applied.

search_dockets

ChatGPT
Search CourtListener RECAP for federal PACER dockets by party name or docket number. Ambiguous same-number matches are returned for court disambiguation.

verify_citations_in_text

ChatGPT
Check every citation in a draft, brief, memo, or passage. One call checks the whole text, so send the full document rather than one citation at a time. This is the cite-check tool. Returns each citation's position, status, type, and source.
