Overview

Shadowfolio tests your own investing strategy, described in plain English. It turns your words into exact rules, asks for anything you left open (what to trade, when to buy, when to sell, how often to rebalance, how to size positions), and backtests them over the last 12 months of end-of-day prices for US stocks and ETFs. You see total return, max drawdown, Sharpe ratio, volatility, win rate and the number of trades next to a benchmark (SPY unless you name another), with the equity curve and month-by-month returns. Change any rule in the card, or in words, and run it again. Save a strategy and Shadowfolio keeps a hypothetical 10,000 shadow portfolio of it, updated after every US market close, so you can come back and see how it would be doing since the day you saved it. Ask "how is strategy #1 doing?" any time, or share a link to its record. Rules you can use: price against a moving average, moving-average crosses, RSI levels, returns over a period, distance from a recent high, market filters on another ticker, momentum or low-volatility ranking, stop losses, take-profits, holding periods, fixed weights and inverse-volatility sizing. Limits: - Hypothetical results only. Shadowfolio never gives investment advice, never suggests securities or strategies, and cannot place trades or connect to a broker. - US-listed stocks, ETFs and mutual funds; daily closing prices (no intraday). End-of-day prices come from Yahoo Finance. - Trades fill at the close with a cost you can set (0.05% by default); no taxes. - Index presets use today's members for the past year, which flatters past results; results say so. - No accounts: saved strategies are kept under ChatGPT's anonymous user ID. Say "Delete my Shadowfolio data" to delete them.

Tools

delete_my_data

ChatGPT
Use this when the user asks to delete all their Shadowfolio data. Permanently deletes every saved strategy, tracking record and share link of this user. This can't be undone.

delete_strategy

ChatGPT
Use this when the user asks to stop tracking or delete one saved strategy. Permanently deletes it, its tracking record and its share link. This can't be undone.

draft_strategy

ChatGPT
Use this when the user describes an investing or trading strategy they want to test (or wants to change one) and any of these is still open: what to trade, when to buy, when to sell, how often to rebalance, how to size positions. strategy holds what the user said; fields the user didn't mention stay out of it. Returns the rules in plain English, the open questions with the default each would get, and any problems; the card shows an editable rule builder. The open questions fit in one short message. Once the user answers them, or accepts the defaults (use_defaults), run_backtest takes the returned rules. Read-only.

list_my_strategies

ChatGPT
Use this when the user asks about their saved Shadowfolio strategies or how they are doing overall. Lists each saved strategy with its number, name, the day tracking started and its hypothetical return since then next to its benchmark's. Read-only.

run_backtest

ChatGPT
Use this to test the user's strategy over the last 12 months of daily end-of-day prices of US stocks and ETFs, after the rules are settled (see draft_strategy). The strategy goes in as rules; anything left out gets the default listed in the result. Returns total return, max drawdown, Sharpe ratio, volatility, win rate and number of trades for the strategy and its benchmark (SPY unless the user named one), and the card draws both curves. Results are hypothetical: trades fill at the close with the stated cost, no taxes, and presets use today's index members; the result's summary carries these caveats. Read-only; it places no trades.

save_strategy

ChatGPT
Use this when the user asks to save, track, follow or paper-trade a strategy. Saves it under the user's anonymous ChatGPT ID and starts a hypothetical 10,000 shadow portfolio from the latest close; Shadowfolio updates it after every US market close, so the user can come back and see how it would be doing. It takes the same strategy that was backtested. Saving the same rules again returns the existing one (safe to retry). No real money and no trades are involved.

search_symbols

ChatGPT
Ticker and company-name lookup over Shadowfolio's starter list (S&P 500 members and about 100 popular ETFs), for the card's rule builder. It doesn't suggest or rank investments.

show_strategy

ChatGPT
Use this when the user asks how one saved strategy is doing, by its number or name. Shows its forward-tracking record since it was saved (hypothetical return, max drawdown, benchmark), its current simulated holdings and recent simulated trades, and the backtest from when it was saved. Read-only.
