Overview

Sift keeps the research behind a decision in one place. Ask to compare options, such as daycares, strollers or apartments, and save the result as a Sift space: a table of options against the factors that matter, with source links and supporting quotes for researched values. Open the space to sort, filter, see located options on a map, add your own notes and share it with the people deciding with you. You can also continue an existing space: find more options, fill gaps or add a factor. Start a new comparison without signing in, then claim the same space to your Sift account. Connect your account to continue your saved spaces. New spaces can be viewed by anyone with their link. ChatGPT performs the research; Sift checks submitted values and citations but does not independently verify that every quote appears on its source page. Some cells stay blank when a fact cannot be sourced.

Tools

add_factor

ChatGPT
Adds a column to a space. The column starts empty; research the values and write them with fill_cells. Adding a factor that was removed earlier brings it back with the values it had.

add_items

ChatGPT
Adds options to a space, up to 10 per call, each with the sourced values you found. An item already in the space is matched instead of duplicated, and only its blank cells are filled. A value without a source_url and a word-for-word quote is refused. The result lists what was added and every refused value with its reason.

claim_space

ChatGPT
When the user who created a guest space asks to save it to their account, connects Sift if needed, then claims the SAME space. Assigns ownership to the connected account and retires its guest_token. People it was shared with keep editing through its edit link, and the owner can turn that off. The research is kept. Pass its guest_token. Never rebuild the research.

connect_account

ChatGPT
Connect the user's Sift account when they ask to connect, sign in, or open their saved spaces. New comparisons work as guests without this step.

correct_cell

ChatGPT
Replaces one existing researched value with a newly sourced one. Use it only when the user asks for a correction or a value is plainly wrong. It needs the same source_url and word-for-word quote as any value. A cell a member edited by hand is never changed.

create_space

ChatGPT
Creates a new, empty Sift space with its factors: the ones propose_factors returned plus any you added. Call it once per comparison, right after propose_factors, then start researching. Works without sign-in. Returns the space id and, for guests, guest_token to pass on every later call. Keep that token private. Give the user the ordinary url: anyone with it can view the space. A link for someone else to add to it comes from share_space.

fill_cells

ChatGPT
Writes sourced values into cells that are blank, up to 50 per call. Use it after get_space shows gaps, or after adding a factor. A cell that already has a value is left alone and reported; changing one is correct_cell. For the factor "Summary", send the write-up as the value with no quote.

finish_space

ChatGPT
Marks the research on a space as done and returns the final counts and the link. Call it once the table is as full as sourced values allow. Safe to call again after later additions.

get_profile

ChatGPT
Returns the Sift account this connection is signed in to: a stable id, and the name and email for display. Use it when the user asks which Sift account is connected.

get_space

ChatGPT
Reads a space: its factors, its items with their values and sources, and the gaps still open (blank cells, items without an image, a map pin or a summary). Use it to continue a space the user already has, to decide what to research next, and to know when to stop.

join_space

ChatGPT
Use this when the user pastes a Sift link containing #sift-edit= (an edit link someone shared with them). Opens that space for editing here and returns its space_id and a guest_token to pass on later calls. Then continue with get_space. A link without #sift-edit= only lets the user view.

list_spaces

ChatGPT
Lists the user's Sift spaces, most recently changed first: those saved to their connected account, and the guest spaces they made or joined (guest: true), which their tools open without a guest_token. Use it when the user refers to a space they already have and you do not have its id.

open_space_view

ChatGPT
Used by the space card to open the full view of a space inside the conversation. Returns the page to show, and with the full view's key hash a short-lived pass bound to it. It changes nothing.

propose_factors

ChatGPT
Use this when the user wants to find, compare or choose among options, whether or not they name Sift: the best of something ("find me the best food processors"), which one to buy, X vs Y, or places and services in an area (daycares near me, hotels for a trip). It starts every new comparison. Do not use it for a single fact, a how-to, or a comparison the user wants kept in the chat. Returns the factors (columns) Sift would compare on, plus the kind of thing and the place to search: the one the request names or, when it names none and the place matters ("near me", a daycare), the user's general area as ChatGPT shares it (location_source "user_area"). It creates nothing. Keep these factors, add the ones you would also compare on, then call create_space straight away. Do not stop to ask the user to approve the list. If the user said to compare only certain factors, create the space with exactly those and add none of your own.

refresh_space_card

ChatGPT
Used by the space card to stay current while it is on screen. Returns nothing new when the space is still at the revision the card shows, else the card's data. It changes nothing.

remove_factor

ChatGPT
Removes a column from a space. Use it only when the user asks. Its values are kept, and adding a factor with the same name brings the column back.

remove_items

ChatGPT
Removes options from a space, up to 25 per call. Use it only when the user asks; there is no undo.

share_space

ChatGPT
Use this whenever the user wants a link for someone else to use (a partner, spouse, friend, roommate, family member), asks to share, send or invite someone to a space, or says another person wants to add to it or help, from that person's own chat with no Sift account needed. Call it without asking first: making the link shares nothing until the user sends it. Returns share_url: give it to the user to send, and say plainly that anyone who has it can add to and change the space. One tap opens ChatGPT with a message to join the space ready to send. edit_url is the plain link, for pasting into a chat with Sift. Calling again returns the same links; unshare_space turns them off. Never for posting somewhere public (social media, a forum, a neighborhood or community group), where strangers would see it: give the ordinary url there. The ordinary url only lets people view; give it also for the user's own use or when they say the person should only look. When the link is off, only the space's owner (for a guest space, its creator) can turn it on.

show_space

ChatGPT
Shows a space to the user as a card in the conversation: its options with their headline values and a button to open it in Sift. Call it once, after finish_space or when the user asks to see a space. It changes nothing. Read the space with get_space when you need its contents yourself.

unshare_space

ChatGPT
Turns off a space's edit link when its owner asks (for a guest space, the person who created it). The link stops working and the people who joined with it can no longer change the space; on a space saved to an account, everyone working on it from a chat stops. Anyone with the ordinary link can still view it. share_space afterwards makes a new link.

update_factor

ChatGPT
Renames a factor or changes its description, format, options or unit. Changing the format clears the column's researched values, because they no longer fit; refill them with fill_cells. Values members typed themselves are kept. On a select factor, off_list lists every item whose value is not one of the options (as after an option is removed): fix those with correct_cell, except the ones a person typed (set_by_member), which only the user can change.

update_item

ChatGPT
Changes an item's title, link, address, image or summary. Give only the fields to change. A new address moves the item's map pin (on a space whose map runs on an address factor, the address is written to that factor, cited to the item's page); a link or image that does not load is refused.

update_space

ChatGPT
Changes a space's title.
