Overview

Trains.fyi brings railway information into your conversations with Claude. Find stations by name and geographic context, identify rail networks and operators, look up a train’s currently available position, view its trip stops, and check up to five upcoming station departures. These train tools work without a Trains.fyi account. Coverage and freshness vary by network. Positions may be vehicle-sourced or estimated, and estimates are identified accordingly. Timetables do not guarantee that a service runs today. A missing position does not mean a train is cancelled.

Tools

find_network

Claude
Find train networks or operators by name, abbreviation or city using the TrainsFYI search API. Returns up to five matches and their slugs for find_train.

find_station

Claude
Find stations using the shared intelligent search API, grouped by station identities. Name may include geography: St Marys Ontario, or Toronto Union. Optional city, region, country and network parameters constrain the search. Preserve all requested geography; never retry by dropping it when no matches are found. Confirm ambiguous places and spelling matches. Use the chosen member station_id for departures; do not show internal IDs unless requested.

find_train

Claude
Find a train by name, number or vehicle ID within a network and return its currently available position. Use a network slug from find_network; ask for the operator when unknown. Returns up to five matches, with source and freshness metadata. Estimates must not be described as live GPS. With no position, returns timetable candidates whose service date is unverified; do not claim they run today. Use the selected match gtfs.trip_id (or timetable candidate trip_id) with get_train_stops for follow-up questions. Lead with route, delay and freshness, not coordinates or IDs.

get_station_departures

Claude
Get up to five upcoming departures from a station. Use station_id from the chosen find_station member; prefer its operator-specific station_id to complex_id. Optional network slug filters the board. Show destination, local railway time, delay/status and platform when available. Ask which operator when ambiguous. This tool is for current departures, not a requested future date.

get_train_stops

Claude
Get a trip timetable, available realtime arrival/departure times, delays and platforms. Use trip_id from find_train (gtfs.trip_id), a timetable candidate, or a departure. Never use the train number as a trip ID. Pass service_date from the selected train when available to prevent mixing different runs. Times use the railway timezone. Upcoming stops are explicitly time-based estimates, not observed passage. If service_date is unknown, show the timetable without claiming service today.

isLoggedIn

Claude
Return whether this connector request has a verified TrainsFYI account connection. Anonymous requests return false. This does not indicate whether the user is signed in elsewhere.

isPremium

Claude
Sign in to TrainsFYI and check whether the connected account currently has Pro access. A free signed-in account returns false. This checks account status and does not purchase or change a subscription.
