check_citations
ChatGPTUse this when the user asks whether a paper was retracted or whether its own reference list holds up. Free, read-only: the paper's registry identity verdict, retraction status, and the audit of its own reference list (does each cited work exist and is it registered?). paper is a DOI, an arXiv id, a doi.org/arxiv.org URL, or a CoChat Library paper id. Never creates, verifies or dispatches anything — plan='refused' when CoChat doesn't already hold a publicly-identified copy of this paper (call verify_paper first to add and verify it); plan='pending' while its citation graph has not been fetched yet by other means. This never spends a paper verification.
check_claims
ChatGPTUse this when the user wants a paper's claims and whether the works it cites support them. Returns the paper's own claims and each one's reference-support verdicts. paper is a DOI, an arXiv id, a doi.org/arxiv.org URL, or a CoChat Library paper id. If nothing has been checked yet this starts verify_paper's one metered run and answers plan='started'; call it again once the plan reads 'ready'.
fetch
ChatGPTUse this when you need what a paper actually says, to summarize it, quote it or check a detail, and you have its id (DOI / arXiv id / ERIC id / URL), usually from a search result. Reads CoChat's own indexed full text first when we already hold it; otherwise resolves a free open-access copy (arXiv, Unpaywall, Semantic Scholar, CORE, ERIC) and returns the extracted body — including on a paper's first fetch, which also adds it to CoChat's shared index. Falls back to the abstract when no open-access full text exists anywhere, or when the held text is licensed for analysis only. Never fabricate a body — trust the returned status.
search
ChatGPTUse this when the user wants scholarly sources on a topic: papers, studies, peer-reviewed articles, preprints, patents, grants or clinical trials, for example sources for an essay or a literature review, or evidence for or against a claim. Searches many databases (CrossRef, Semantic Scholar, arXiv, PubMed, OpenAlex, ClinicalTrials, and more) and returns citable results with real DOIs and links. Pick a domain to route the query; set peer_reviewed_only for peer-reviewed work only. Use fetch to read a result's full text. Do not use for news or general web pages.
self_check
ChatGPTUse this when the user asks whether a paper's numbers are consistent. Returns the paper's Self-check findings — arithmetic, unit and internal-contradiction issues an independent verifier confirmed. paper is a DOI, an arXiv id, a doi.org/arxiv.org URL, or a CoChat Library paper id. Starts the metered run when nothing exists yet (plan='started').
stats_check
ChatGPTUse this when the user asks whether a paper's statistics are reported correctly. Returns the paper's Stats check findings — statistics CoChat recomputed from the paper's own reported numbers. paper is a DOI, an arXiv id, a doi.org/arxiv.org URL, or a CoChat Library paper id. Starts the metered run when nothing exists yet (plan='started').
verify_citation
ChatGPTUse this when the user gives a reference or a DOI and asks whether it is real or correct. Confirms the citation against the DOI registries (CrossRef and DataCite): does the DOI resolve and do the title/authors/year match? Catches fabricated or hallucinated DOIs (verified / verified_with_note / disputed / not_found). Pass at least the title or the DOI; for an arXiv paper pass its DOI, 10.48550/arXiv.<id>, with no version suffix: 10.48550/arXiv.1706.03762, not 10.48550/arXiv.1706.03762v5.
verify_claim
ChatGPTUse this when the user asks whether a specific paper supports a statement attributed to it, for example a sentence in their essay that cites the paper. Judged only on CoChat's full-text copy of the cited paper: the same check the CoChat app runs, never an abstract or a search snippet. The claim is recorded in the user's CoChat Library. A direct quote (claim_type='direct_quote') found word for word is confirmed for free; anything else uses one claim check from the user's daily allowance. When CoChat does not hold the paper's full text yet, it is requested and nothing is charged (status 'not_checked', reason 'awaiting_fulltext'): ask again later. The paper must already be in the CoChat Library.
verify_paper
ChatGPTUse this when the user wants one paper checked as a whole: do its claims, numbers and statistics hold up, and do its references support it. Returns claims, Self-check, Stats check, reference support and a summary — the same report CoChat's Library and public pages show, with every claim (never gated to a few). paper is a DOI, an arXiv id, a doi.org/arxiv.org URL, or a CoChat Library paper id. Spends one of the caller's monthly paper verifications only when the paper actually needs new work (plan='started'); viewing an already-verified paper (plan='ready') is always free, and asking again for the same paper version never charges twice. No full text answers plan='abstract_only', not an error.
