Overview

cytado helps you ground academic writing in real, published sources. Ask it to support a claim and it looks for an existing publication — authors, title, journal, year — and returns the printed page number with a short quote from that page, so you can check the footnote against the source yourself. It searches scholarly registries (OpenAlex, Crossref, DOAJ, DOAB and more) plus a full-text corpus with real pagination, and can gather sources for a chapter outline. When it finds no supporting source, it says so instead of suggesting one. Works in English, Polish and German. Limitations: cytado finds sources and shows how directly each quote supports a claim; you should still read the source before citing it. It does not write or submit your work. Topics not yet in the corpus need a background harvest that takes 5–30 minutes.

Tools

check_corpus

ChatGPT
FREE preview by default: call BEFORE ground_citation or get_chapter_sources to learn whether the corpus already covers a topic (coverage counts) and whether a full run would trigger a paid harvest. With provision:true it actually starts a background harvest job when coverage is insufficient and returns a jobId — poll it with check_harvest_status (usually about 10 minutes). When the response has user_message, pass it on to the user in their language. Billing: the preview (provision omitted or false) is always free. provision:true uses one topic from the account's allowance ONLY if a harvest actually starts (sufficient coverage = nothing used, no job): free accounts include 3 new topics per month at no cost, plans include more. When asking the user for confirmation, say it uses one of their free topics — not that it costs money.

check_harvest_status

ChatGPT
Call to check progress of a background harvest started by check_corpus with provision:true. Free. Returns status (queued | running | done | failed | unknown), a ready flag and current coverage. Poll every 30-60 seconds; when ready is true, call ground_citation or get_chapter_sources again — the corpus now includes the harvested sources. Pass the SAME topic/outline/langs you used in check_corpus, or coverage will be computed for a different topic string.

get_chapter_sources

ChatGPT
Call when writing a chapter or section of an academic text and you need several sources with page-tagged text excerpts to cite from. Returns up to limit sources, each with metadata (title, authors, year, DOI/URL) and excerpts marked with printed page numbers (=== STRONA N ===), plus a paginated flag (can this source support a page-precise footnote), a tier flag (wprost = directly on topic, tlo = background) and wsparcie — does the returned excerpt ITSELF support the chapter (wprost/posrednie/brak, null = not assessed); cite freely from wprost, read-and-qualify posrednie, and do not hang chapter claims on brak. Present only the sources this tool returned, each with its page number; do not mix in sources from your own knowledge or web search (if you add any, list them separately as "not verified by cytado, no page number"). Billing: charged per NEW document returned (already-charged and background documents are free); zero sources costs nothing. Use check_corpus first if you want to know coverage before calling.

ground_citation

ChatGPT
Call when you have factual claims that need real academic citations with printed page numbers. For each claim, returns a verified source (title, authors, year, DOI/URL, page number, short quote) or found:false — this tool never invents sources. Resolves from an existing corpus in seconds. Present each returned source with its page number and the short quote (snippet), so the user can see which references are page-verified by cytado. WORKFLOW — call this BEFORE writing the final text: (1) plan the claims your text will make, (2) ground them with this tool, (3) write the text ONCE, with footnote markers (¹, ², …) already at the grounded sentences and the full references underneath (authors, title, journal/publisher, year, page — e.g. “A. Kowalska, Tytuł pracy, „Czasopismo” 2023, s. 45.”). Do NOT write a draft without citations and then rewrite it — for long texts (chapters, multi-paragraph sections) ground claims section by section and write each section once, with its footnotes in place. Never show the user grounded text without visible citations. If claims come back found:false (read note when present), the corpus does not cover them yet: tell the user and offer to call check_corpus with provision:true for the underlying topic. After the harvest job (5-30 min, poll with check_harvest_status) call this tool again. Each source carries wsparcie — does the returned snippet ITSELF back the claim: "wprost" (snippet states it — cite as-is), "posrednie" (same phenomenon, context only — read before citing and qualify), "brak" (snippet does not state it — treat like found:false for this exact sentence and pick another source or rephrase), null (not assessed). Billing: only resolved claims are charged (per citation); unresolved ones are free. The same document for the same topic is never charged twice.

verify_references

ChatGPT
Call when the user asks whether references, citations or a bibliography they ALREADY HAVE are real and correctly described (e.g. "are these references real?", "check my bibliography", "did ChatGPT make up this source?"). Pass the entries exactly as the user pasted them. Checks each entry against scholarly databases (Crossref, OpenAlex, Google Books, DOAJ) and the web. Statuses: "verified" = found in a scholarly database with matching metadata; "probable" = found on the web, not in the databases; "unverified" = we could not confirm it — this is NOT proof that the reference is fabricated, say "could not be confirmed", never "fake". Use match to show the user the correct metadata (DOI, year, journal). Billing: free — no citations charged. Accounts without a paid project get one full check, then the first 3 entries per check (more_not_checked says how many were skipped).
