Overview

Litmaps helps you discover and organise academic literature using the citation network. Ask ChatGPT to find papers on a topic, explore everything related to a paper you already know, and see the results as an interactive Litmaps citation map: papers laid out by publication date and citation count, connected by their citations. With Litmaps in ChatGPT you can: - Search Litmaps' database of academic articles by keyword or DOI. - Find related work for one or more papers using Litmaps' citation-connected ranking: papers that share citations and references with yours, including work that never cites them directly. - Get a paper's full reference list or every paper that cites it. - Find papers by authors your seed papers share. - Check whether a paper has been retracted. - Create maps in your Litmaps account, annotate them with labels and themed groups, and view them right in the conversation. - Save papers to tags (collections) and your Read Later list. Sign in with your Litmaps account to use your library. Maps are shown as they are in your account, and stay private. Editing, panning and zooming a map happen in the Litmaps app; the map in ChatGPT is a read-only view with a link to open it there. Limitations: this app can't delete maps, tags or papers, or change account settings. The in-chat map uses Litmaps' standard layout (publication date by citations).

Tools

add_articles_to_collection

ChatGPT
Add articles to a collection.

add_articles_to_litmap

ChatGPT
Add articles to a saved Litmap. Call show_litmap afterwards to show the updated Litmap in the conversation.

annotate_litmap

ChatGPT
Annotate a Litmap that already exists, the way a user can in the Litmaps app: give papers a short label, a coloured outline or an icon, and put papers into named, coloured groups. Fields left unset are unchanged. It can replace or remove labels, outlines and icons the user made, and recolour their tags, so the user is asked to confirm. Groups are Litmaps tags (collections): a group reuses the workspace's tag of the same name or creates one, adds the papers to it, and shows it on this Litmap. To annotate a Litmap you're creating, pass the annotations to create_litmap instead.

check_retraction

ChatGPT
Check whether a DOI has been retracted. Worth running before relying on a paper.

create_collection

ChatGPT
Create a new collection (shown as a Tag in the Litmaps app) in a workspace. Leave colour unset to get a brand colour the workspace uses least.

create_litmap

ChatGPT
Create a new Litmap (a saved citation map) in the user's workspace, optionally with articles on it, labelled and grouped as it's created: pass articles (a short label, coloured outline or icon per paper) and groups (named, coloured groups of papers, stored as Litmaps tags). Annotating here only adds to the user's account, so prefer it to a separate annotate_litmap call. Use it when the user wants to keep a Litmap; to just show papers, use show_litmap with their article IDs, which saves nothing.

get_article_authors

ChatGPT
Fetch an article's authors in order, with their position on the paper.

get_articles

ChatGPT
Fetch full details for one or more Litmaps article IDs.

get_articles_by_doi

ChatGPT
Look up articles by DOI. Returns Litmaps article IDs usable with the other tools.

get_collection_articles

ChatGPT
List the articles saved in a collection.

get_litmap_articles

ChatGPT
Fetch a Litmap's details and the articles on it.

get_litmap_graph

ChatGPT
The papers, citations, annotations and groups of a Litmap, for the Litmap view to draw. Only the view calls it.

get_map_graph

ChatGPT
get_litmap_graph under its name from before Litmaps were called Litmaps, for the views in older chats. Only the view calls it.

list_collections

ChatGPT
List the collections in a workspace.

list_litmaps

ChatGPT
List the Litmaps (saved citation maps) in a workspace.

list_read_later

ChatGPT
List the user's Read Later articles.

list_workspaces

ChatGPT
List the workspaces available to the authenticated user. Workspace IDs are needed to list or create Litmaps and collections.

search_articles

ChatGPT
Search the Litmaps corpus by keyword and return matching articles. Use this to find seed papers, then feed their IDs to find_related_articles.

show_litmap

ChatGPT
Show papers as a Litmap: an interactive citation map in the conversation, with papers laid out by publication date and citation count and linked by their citations. Either show a saved Litmap from the user's account (litmap_id), or show papers you found (article_ids, with the seeds they came from), which saves nothing. Use it to present search and discovery results, and whenever the user wants to see papers or a Litmap. Annotate the papers you show with articles (a short label, coloured outline or icon per paper, e.g. 'start here', 'review') and groups (named, coloured groups by theme), drawn on the Litmap without saving anything. Also returns a link for clients that can't display it.

update_read_later

ChatGPT
Add or remove articles from the user's Read Later list.
