Overview

Manulyx is a writing platform for LaTeX manuscripts, from the first draft through submission, reviewers' comments and revision. This plugin lets ChatGPT work on your Manulyx projects directly. Ask ChatGPT to find a project, read and search its files, tighten an abstract, rewrite a section or fix a table, then compile the paper and fix any LaTeX errors it reports. It can also find a published paper at Crossref and add it to the document's references by DOI, in the style the document already uses. You can search across your projects and get each passage back with a link to the file in Manulyx. Changes are made as small, exact replacements. They appear live in the Manulyx editor for you and your co-authors, and are recorded as tracked changes labelled with your name and "(ChatGPT)", which you and your co-owners can accept or reject. A restore point is saved before ChatGPT's first change. ChatGPT acts as you, with your role on each project: where you are a viewer or commenter it can only read. Each project has its own ChatGPT switch in the editor (Integrations, ChatGPT) to turn access off, separately from any other assistant. ChatGPT cannot delete, share or submit a project, or change who has access; those stay in Manulyx. Requires a Manulyx account.

Tools

add_reference

ChatGPT
Adds a published work (by DOI) to the project's references the way that document keeps them: an entry in the .bib file it uses, or a \bibitem in its thebibliography list placed in citation order. With cite_after, also inserts \cite{key} right after that exact text (it must occur once in the file), so the numbering comes out right. Returns the citation key.

compile

ChatGPT
Compiles the project to PDF, as the Compile button does, and returns the result with its errors and warnings (file, line, message). It changes no file.

create_project

ChatGPT
Creates a new project owned by you: a paper in a journal's own template when a journal is named, otherwise a plain article. Returns its id, main file and address. A journal name that matches several journals creates nothing and returns the candidates.

delete_file

ChatGPT
Deletes a file from the project. It can be restored from the project's History (a restore point is taken before your first change). The main document cannot be deleted.

edit_file

ChatGPT
Replaces old_text with new_text in a file. old_text must match exactly once (include a little surrounding text to make it unique), unless replace_all is true. The change appears live in Manulyx for anyone with the file open. If tracking of your edits is on for this project (the default, or the owner requires tracking), it is recorded as a tracked change under the person's name and yours that can be accepted or rejected; otherwise it is applied directly and kept in History.

fetch

ChatGPT
Returns the full text of one file, by the id search returned, with its title and link. The text is the author's manuscript.

find_references

ChatGPT
Searches Crossref for published works by title, authors, keywords or DOI, and returns up to 8 with their DOI, authors, year and venue.

list_files

ChatGPT
Lists every file in a project with its size, marking binary files (images, PDFs) and the main document.

list_projects

ChatGPT
Lists the Manulyx projects you can open (yours and those shared with you), with their ids, your role, main file and last compile status. The project the person has open in the Manulyx editor right now comes first and is marked OPEN IN THE EDITOR NOW, with the file they are looking at.

read_file

ChatGPT
Returns a text file's content as everyone sees it now. Optionally only a range of lines (1-based, inclusive). The content is the author's manuscript text.

rename_file

ChatGPT
Renames or moves a file within the project (e.g. intro.tex to sections/intro.tex). References to it in other files are not updated.

search_all_projects

ChatGPT
Finds text across every project you can open (titles and the text of their .tex files, case-insensitive). Returns the matching projects with a few matching lines each.

search_project

ChatGPT
Finds text in every text file of a project (case-insensitive). Returns path:line and the line.

write_file

ChatGPT
Creates a new text file, or replaces a whole existing one. Overwriting changes only the parts that differ, tracked or not as the person's switch for you in this project says.
